Difference between distance and displacement
Distance Displacement
❖ Total length of path
covered by a body
❖ Scalar quantity
❖ DIstance travelled is non-
zero, even for a closed path
Displacement
❖ Shortest distance between
initial & final positions
❖ Vector quantity
❖ For a closed path,
displacement is zero
Average Speed
The ratio of distance covered by a particle and time is called Average speed
Instantaneous Speed
The instantaneous speed of an object is the speed of the object at a particular moment (instant) of time
It is the ratio of total displacement to the total time taken
Instantaneous Acceleration
It is defined as ratio of the change in velocity to the time interval
● Acceleration of object is constant →i.e. a = constant ●Equations are to be applied vectorially
a.Use directions
b.We can only get displacement
